Long time no talk – it’s time for an update! We have some HUGE news! We’re writing a book!! It’s something that we’ve thought about for a long time and when a publisher approached us, it ended up being a great fit, so we decided to go for it and say YES! It will of course focus on DIY and specialize on rental or small spaces – one of our passions! I started this blog when we moved to CA, since then, we’ve lived in 6 rentals in 4 states (and bought a house) so we’ve lived in our fair share of spaces.
Which leads into our next HUGE news! We will be living in our Maryland home permanently! Yes, no plans of moving anytime soon! We were offered an opportunity to live here full time – it was a hard decision, but ultimately we know it will be best for our family. John will be able to see his grandparents much more often, and we will have much more support (if you’re long distance from your family /and especially single parents or if your spouse travels/works a lot, I have major respect for you, it’s hard!) We will also have more time to devote to projects – something that has been missing over the past few years. I realized that I never fully explained that. Around that time I started working full time outside of the blog and we had a lot of not so fun house projects come up. So those things took a lot of our free time. And the second part .. honestly, I didn’t really want to share, didn’t feel ready, and felt overwhelmed. About 2.5 years ago, I had a miscarriage and it really changed me, it changed my perspective on life. I spent more time focusing on myself and my health. For my own health, I needed to disconnect some from social media/blogging.
Our road to John wasn’t easy, but he just turned one and it’s a reminder of how life is full of highs and lows. The low periods can feel like forever, but the highs eventually come. Things might not go always as planned, but God is good. Going through a loss really made me so thankful for the blessings in my life. I do fully recognize that so many people have gone through something far worse than me.. I don’t feel that this is the place to share all the details of my experience (I’ve really been struggling with what people would like to see here, since it is a design blog, but feel free to reach out to me individually if you’d like 🙂 I know it can be so so hard – if you’ve gone through something similar and need someone to talk to. sarahmdorseydesigns (@) gmail.com or sarah (@) dorseydesigns.com ( ) added to reduce spam, please remove 🙂
We are super excited to be writing a book! It almost feels like a restart – to focus on projects again! As you can probably guess, writing a book is very time consuming, but I’ll be sure to share progress as we go. Scheduled to be released in 2019!!
Stay tuned! And a big thank you for sticking with us during the slower period! I love the community that we’ve built here – I look forward to sharing more 🙂

I’ve always been so inspired by your incredible creativity, and just wanted to say thank you for your openness about your miscarriage. Sometimes it can feel like all there is online is happy pregnancy news, and it’s meant so much whenever folks have shared the ways in which their road to parenthood wasn’t as smooth as it appeared from the outside. So many of us struggle (whether it’s with loss, infertility, etc) and it’s so helpful to remember we’re not alone. Thank you!

Hi Sage! Thank you so much for commenting! I completely agree with you on social media and pregnancy news. I feel that it has changed some recently – sharing more of the struggles, but still a ways to go. Love the community that has built online.

Yay a BOOK!!! Let us know when we can preorder! I, too, was profoundly changed by miscarriage and squeeze my now 4 year old a little tighter because of it. Thanks for sharing your experience and coming forward to acknowledge that you took time to reprioritize. So often miscarriage is swept away under the rug, kept a secret, and therefore people don’t know how common and heartbreaking it is. Long time follower of yours, second time commenter 🙂
