We’ve been wanting to add an accent wall behind our TV since we completed this space a few years ago (reveal post HERE) We found the perfect (surprisingly easy) solution! Typically you think of straight applications with FrogTape, but we found a way to use FrogTape to add structure and precision, but incorporate hand painting as well. Read on to see how we made this hand painted wavy abstract wall!
BEFORE
MATERIALS
FrogTape Delicate .94″(Multi Surface would probably work well too)
Firm bristle paint brush
A few shades of paint (We used SW 7015, SW 7016, and mixed a little white in to make a subtle value shift)
To get started, tape the border of the desired area.
We referenced THIS wallpaper. Love the pattern and color variation!
Next, this looks a little strange at first, but you create a wavy line by creasing and smoothing the edges of the FrogTape as you go. The idea is to get the tape mostly flat, but not completely. You just need to smooth and crease the line where you will be painting. You can use a plastic scraper or your finger to smooth creases. The crisp edge for the negative space created by FrogTape, perfectly contrasted with the handprinted vertical stripes. Video laying out the tape HERE
As you go, alternate wide and thin areas, refer to your inspiration image, if you have one. Don’t be afraid to mess up, you can easily remove the FrogTape and redo an area if you need to.
Get started painting! Use a firm bristle paint brush, alternate thick and thin lines and vary opacity of the paint. Try to keep the paint brush relatively straight. Smooth the FrogTape as you go. We varied color in each section.
This went surprisingly fast, with both David and I painting, this wall took us about two, two hour sessions! HERE’S a time-lapse of us painting! When done remove the tape, video HERE and that’s it!!
I love how it turned out!

I love the combination between the structure that using the FrogTape added and the hand painting.
Until next time friends!
