I’m so excited to share with you our hall and closet update!
Our hall looked bright and fresh, but the white walls, doors, and ceiling were a little stark. We wanted to add a little color and contrast. I was so excited when Behr approached me about completing a home project with a DUO (I selected David, of course!) Home projects are always better together!
Our goal was to complete this project in a weekend and we succeeded! In the midst of major home projects, it helps to finish something a little smaller that can be completed in just a few days. Perfect motivation to keep going on those more time-consuming projects!
A reminder of what it looked like when we first moved in. Since then, we’ve painted the wood, installed new railing (I’ve never shared, be on the lookout soon!), gutted and remodeled the kitchen(including running hardwood in and refinishing the floors). Still a lot to do, but wow! Looking back at these photos reminds me of how far we have come.
Our closet used to have one shelf and a hanging rod, completely dysfunctional for this side of the house where we needed shelving. Last week, we added an outlet to the closet, so we can charge our vacuum. Game changer! We used to charge our vacuum on the floor, running to get it out of the way before John got to it!
The closet was the perfect opportunity for a punch of color in our house – with the post and beam construction, we’re keeping all the main walls white. I love the contrast that Behr’s Color of the Year 2019, Blueprint, adds! It’s saturated and bold yet calming. Perfect for so many applications!
First, David painted the closet with Behr Premium Plus Ultra® Interior Matte. We’ve used a lot of paint and were super impressed with how easily it applied and how well it covered! The Paint & Primer in One saves time and works well! We probably could have gotten away with one coat (going over white!), but applied two, just to make sure everything was covered.
For the shelving, we added a custom peg board inspired system that would allow the shelves to be adjusted as needed. Tutorial to follow! I’m obsessed with the look and love how easy it was! The vacuum stores easily and charges while it’s not in use.
Art was custom made by myself, tutorial to follow in my upcoming book!! So excited to share a peek of what we’ve been working on for the past few months. Stay tuned for more details!
Since all the main walls in our house are white, I wanted to add a little contrast by painting all the interior doors a contrasting color. Utilizing Behr’s 2019 Color Trends Palette, we selected Elephant Skin for the doors and used Behr Premium Plus Ultra Interior Semi-Gloss Enamel.
Originally, we planned to spray the doors outside, but it was too humid and windy. So, we decided to brush and roll them inside. It went on super well! Since it’s an enamel, I found the sheen to be slightly glossier than a standard semi-gloss, so keep that in mind. We removed all the hardware (handle and hinges) to paint. It’s easier than taping it off and gives the cleanest edges. Two coats and we were done!
One last before and after!
If you’re looking to jump start to your color selection, take a look at Behr’s 2019 Color Trends. The Color Trends provides a few palettes, monochromatic, earth tones, pastels, and jewel tones. I’ve been seeing rich, yet muted tones popping up everywhere and these palettes are right on trend! Before starting, we quickly popped in The Home Depot to grab a Color Trends card, with all the trending colors! Super easy! I highly recommend getting a small sample of the paint to try out in your space first. Paint looks completely different depending on the lighting that it’s in, so it’s important to look at it in your space for accurate color representation.
I love how transformative color and paint can be! There is no easier way to quickly change a space! In a weekend, we were able to paint the doors, closet and build a new, custom shelving system.

Hi, this looks fantastic! Did you sand or degloss the doors before painting? Great color combination! Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful work Sarah!!!
Is your book out yet?
What color white did you use on your cabinets and walls?
And what color stain did you use on your floors?
A new fan,

Hi Kathleen! Here’s the link to my book! https://www.amazon.com/Big-Style-Small-Spaces-Apartment/dp/1624147887 Our cabinets are Dove white from Kraftmaid and our walls are pure white from sherwin Williams. The floors are a custom mix, sorry I don’t have the exact stain!
