It’s week 5 of the One Room Challenge – that means just one more week until the reveal! We have a list of DIY projects and up until last week, we hadn’t crossed many off. This past week we crossed A LOT off! That felt really good!
Most of the major DIY projects are complete – the dining room built in, living room built in, wood slice coffee tables, slat wall at the stairs, new oak stair treads. Still left to complete, living room side tables, install the library ladder, and install the dining room windows!
Before Monday, we didn’t have a scheduled delivery for the sofa, living room chairs, dining table, dining room windows, living room rug (talk about nerve wracking!) Both the windows and our living room chairs are scheduled to arrive today, rug this Friday and our dining room table arrive yesterday! Still waiting on confirmation of the sofa delivery date. Fingers crossed (if you remember from week 1, it’s a key element of the space)
This week, I’m working on finishing up the styling for the space. Planning art (this sketch was done in Sketch Up) The space is mostly black, white, and warm wood. I keep going back and forth if I should add color in the art, I’m leaning towards yes.
I was originally planning to use this GORGEOUS grasscloth wallpaper (number: PDSH226) behind the dining room built in shelves, but combined with the vertical posts in our house, that are incorporated into the built in – it just didn’t flow. So I decided to use one of my model home staging techniques and cover a lot of the books in grasscloth. Let me know if you’d like a tutorial on how to cover books. I purchased the cheapest selection of hard cover books from books by the foot(which said it may include inappropriate titles) of course when they arrived most titles weren’t really something I’d want to display, so I’d have to turn them around anyways – this is a great solution! It actually still gives the look of wallpaper on the wall, but works with the existing structure of our house. It takes A LOT of books (even with accessories) to fill a large built in like this.
I’ve also slowly been picking up art / architecture and other books of interest. I’m excited to start getting them all on the shelves (planning to start styling today!) My local goodwill has large art coffee table books pretty frequently for $2.99! I did pick up this Picasso book from Wonder Book and Video for $35 – I love it!
We also got the front door installed. David’s dad came over to help which was good because this is heavy and solid! I’m super impressed with the quality! We finished it off with a gorgeous matte black lever from Emtek (also really solid and heavy!) I was originally considering a contrasting finish, but I’m so glad I went with black! Cabinet door pulls are from Schaub! I looooove them too!!
Lots of pretty shipments this week! Pictured below, Scout Design Studio and Minted!
Finally, John and I took a solo adventure 45 minutes away to look at styling items (which is a tall feat for this almost 2 year old who easily gets bored 🙂 We survived with snacks and new(ish) toys. I got the wood beads from Home Sense and a few other things! Vase is from TJ Maxx.
I haven’t shared a lot of overall images because it want it to be a surprise in the end. I’m SO excited to pull this space together and share finished photos with you in one short week! Oh and we’ve never installed windows before (wish us luck!) We’ll be cutting HOLES in our house – David assures me that its really easy though (he’s almost always right! So I’ve learned to trust him) Wish us luck! Be sure to catch sneak peeks on Instagram as we wrap up the space!

Ohh this is such a tease! And what – books by the foot? Mind. blown.
Sarah Dorsey says
Hi Kayla, Can’t wait to share finished photos! It’s a service through Wonder Book and Video – I linked to it on the post. But if you just search books by the foot, it will pop up too! They let you select by color, genre etc. My books ended up being about $1 per book, so not too bad!

Ohhh it’s coming along. So close. Can’t wait.
